Pros & Cons

What I like in MegaSceneryEarth Belgium?

  • overall high resolution and quality
  • extraordinary quality in some places
  • coverage – the whole country
  • disk size
  • dobre dopasowanie mostów
  • dobrze wykonane rzeki, kanały i zbiorniki wodne
  • kilka charakterystycznych obiektów

What I do not like?

  • airport runways are not aligned with the photoscenery

What could be improved?

  • photo saturation in some areas
  • lines between images of different saturation

In short

Megascenery Earth Belgium is a good scenery! The resolution is very good and the resolution of source images is great. Scenery colors (and saturation) are mostly uniform, although there are differences between regions. The only flaw I noticed was the misalignment of runways in FSX and photoscenery. It’s interesting that there is no problem with how the bridges are aligned.

Purchase, installation and manual

MegaSceneryEarth Belgium can be purchased in MegaSceneryEarth Store and other popular add-on shops. I am reviewing the download version from PC Aviator Store. It consists of 9 files, installer and manual. Each file is about 1GB in size – that makes downloading it easier.

Belgium uses the same manual as other MegaSceneryEarth projects – it describes the suggested PC and FSX configuration – I strongly suggest you read this manual – correct settings can strongly improve your impressions.

Resolution – the level of detail (5*****)

I have not found an official data on resolution of this scenery. They only provide the resolution of source images – 0,5m/px. From my own experience I can tell that it’s probably 1m/px, although some areas seem better. It may be the effect of such a good source images. But the technical background is not important. What is important is the quality – in terms of details it is one of the best large area photosceneries I have seen.

Look at the rail tracks – even the shadows of railway electrification can be seen

Colors / saturation (4****)

In Flanders I noticed that the colors are oversaturated. Greens are too vibrant and yellows and oranges are too bright. It looks like the photo editor overacted. It’s the spring day in full sun times four.

When I headed for Antwerp and Brussels – I noticed a change. I do not think that anyone can objectively question color choice here.

My favorite place is the south-eastern Belgium. Liege and Ardennes. Colors here are credible. Personally I prefer a little desaturated colors in a photoscenery. Here they have hit the spot.

There is a side effect of this changes. On the border between images of a different saturation there is a visible straight line. One such line goes straight through Brussels.

Notice the line in the middle of this image

MegaSceneryEarth Belgium is a single-season, daytime scenery. It’s the market standard and I personally prefer such products over multi-season or day and night sceneries. I have never seen a large area scenery that would use actual seasonal or night images. Usually such sceneries just use photo-edits of images – desaturated for fall, covered with white for winter and darkened for night – it takes a lot of disk space and changes nothing – I find such sceneries “unflyable”. So you are sucked with spring/summer here. For night flights I recommend night scenery – like Night Environment from Aerosoft.

Airports (1*)

My biggest disappointment. I consider proper AFCADS to be the essential part of every photoscenery. This scenery does not have them. This means that every airport is misaligned with the background.

Rivers, lakes, canals and bridges (5*****)

All bodies of water are precisely defined. It’s especially important in a country with so many rivers and canals. When I flew low I noticed that 3d bridges are correctly placed and aligned with aerial images in the background.

Scenery objects (3***)

The scenery includes a few objects – I noticed them in Brussels. I appreciate additional models but the number is insufficient and with the lack of autogen – they look strange.

What is not included

This scenery does not include:

  • autogen
  • mesh

I tried a freeware autogen but I was not satisfied. I am considering openVFR payware autogen. FreeMeshX mesh works well with this scenery.

Summary – 4****

Scenery colors (and saturation) are mostly uniform, although there are differences between regions. The only flaw I noticed was the misalignment of runways in FSX and photoscenery.
